An informational meeting about the fund fornonprofit executives interested in discussing these issues will be held onAugust 13 at United Way Silicon Valley, located at the Sobrato Center forNonprofits in San Jose. "This collaboration takes a comprehensive approach to assisting local nonprofitorganizations by providing resources for both their short-term and long-termneeds," noted Carol Larson, president and CEO of the David and Lucile PackardFoundation. "Silicon Valley is known for rising to a challenge, and the opportunity to makea difference right here in our own backyard cannot be ignored," said Joe Pon,vice president of Corporate Affairs for Applied Materials. "United Way SiliconValley has a history of providing reliable emergency assistance to the SantaClara County community, and partnering with them is a natural fit to ensure thatbasic resources are available to those who need them most." A $530,000 grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation will support theNonprofit Effectiveness Fund to provide educational sessions and subsequentgrant support to nonprofits interested in exploring organizational effectivenessstrategies such as restructuring, mergers, back-office consolidation, programconsolidation, and other strategies. Due to theurgent need, funds have already been received and put to use by benefitingagencies. The gift represents the largest donation ever received by theEmergency Assistance Network to help address urgent needs.
"Nonprofit service providers are bearing a serious burden withthis severe economy. More people need help with the basics like feeding theirfamilies and paying their rent, yet donations are down in most cases. Thesegrants will go toward helping people survive these tough economic times as wellas making sure programs are available when people need them." The Applied Materials Foundation donated a one-time gift of $1 million toestablish the Urgent Community Response Fund, which will provide much-neededresources to United Way`s Emergency Assistance Network and other select agenciesthat provide food, shelter, and other basic services. Demand for thesesafety-net services has increased dramatically over the last year asunemployment and foreclosure rates have risen. Based on estimates, as many as56,000 individuals and families can have access to safety-net services, whichcould potentially prevent them from becoming homeless or going hungry, thanks tothe $1 million contribution from the Applied Materials Foundation. Theannouncement was made this morning at Sacred Heart Community Service on SouthFirst Street in San Jose, an agency that is involved with United Way SiliconValley`s Emergency Assistance Network. "These funds will help us address the new need that is compounding the existingdemand for help," said Carole Leigh Hutton, president and CEO of United WaySilicon Valley.
